I』ve now heard from 7(!) different people that Nintendo has officially employed the 「spread some fake info internally」 to try and discover who’s leaking information. This isn’t the first time they have done this. It failed to catch any of NTH’s sources last time. This might be in reaction to the latest leaks, or it might just be routine for them yearly. I suspect internal Nintendo leaks to go silent for a bit. This is fairly standard practice.

It's common across all product business really. I didn't expect my post to blow up over something that is so well known it has a literal name for it (canary). They likely do this all the time. yearly. The only reason I am hearing so much about it now I think has to do with recent leaks from NTH if I would guess. But, also because it's so common I am sure employees who choose to leak, are very careful with things. Example: NTH almost never reveals anything the moment he's told. He waits, gets multiple sources, and then once it seems solid he goes forward publicly, usually. He's not always been right - there could be some red herrings out there with things like TWW/TP HD, Planet Kirby Robobot HD, or Prime 2/3 - all things he talked publicly about but never came out. But a majority of what he's told, checks out. But yeah, this is very common. The employees inside the company even know it happens. NTH seems pretty good at keeping his sources protected though. It doesn't seem like anyone has actually ever been caught and fired at Nintendo that we're aware of (though, such a thing may not make headlines as Nintendo would want it to be private).
