早在今年6月，總監中西晃史就說：「雖然我們一直想讓里昂來當主角，但這位角色很難與玩家共享恐怖體驗。如果掉個水桶之類的下來，就把他嚇一大跳的話，這樣的里昂我相信玩家也不想看到，驚悚的演出和角色的特性確實是有些不太契合。」
隨後，《惡靈古堡9：安魂曲》製作人熊澤雅人表示，近期網路上關於里昂出現在遊戲中的泄露「均為假消息」。
然而，今天PS商城的意外泄露，讓傳聞已久的里昂回歸傳聞成真。只不過目前尚不清楚能否作為可操作角色。
里昂·甘迺迪是《惡靈古堡》系列的支柱人物之一。他曾是多部《惡靈古堡》作品（例如《惡靈古堡2》和《惡靈古堡4》）中的可操作主角，而隨著《惡靈古堡9：安魂曲》將我們帶回浣熊市，從一開始就有人提出了這樣一個問題——里昂·甘迺迪是否準備好迎接最後一次喪屍大戰?
