《戰慄深隧》系列的最新作品正式定名為《戰慄深隧2039》。曾擔任《戰慄深隧2033》編劇、並繼續為新作《戰慄深隧2039》執筆的德米特里·格魯霍夫斯基，在X平台上發文表示：
「我一直很想跟大家講講《戰慄深隧2039》的故事，只是現實情況還沒走到那一步（指遊戲的宣傳節奏）。如今，它已經不僅僅是反烏托邦或科幻小說了。它和每個人都息息相關。」
The story of Metro 2039 is one that I long wanted to tell, but it had to wait for the reality to catch up. So now it doesn’t seem to be a dystopia or science-fiction any more. Now it is relevant to everyone.
這番言論被網友們解讀為，《戰慄深隧2039》的劇情可能會顛覆一些既有設定，並引入新的理念，大家對此也充滿了期待。

i like grounded fiction dont get me wrong, but come on.. all of that for the sake of being slightly bit more politically charged? atleast let us keep the retrofuturistic railguns or the monsters, theres a reason good sci-fi doesnt try to be para-documents in EVERY aspect...
值得一提的是，格魯霍夫斯基早前就曾提到，這將會是「你們見過的最黑暗的一部《戰慄深隧》遊戲」。當時不少粉絲認為，「黑暗」可能意味著劇情更加曲折、悲情，不少玩家留言懇求「千萬別讓安娜死」。
