近日,曾參與《毀滅戰士》(Doom)和《世紀帝國》(Age of Empires)開發的知名遊戲設計師桑迪·彼得森(Sandy Petersen)在社交平台上公開批評盜版玩家,直言盜版是導致眾多經典遊戲工作室走向衰敗的「罪魁禍首」。他透露,當年《毀滅戰士》的盜版玩家比例高達70%至90%,而《世紀帝國》的盜版率也超過50%。彼得森認為,如此高的盜版率直接導致研發資金嚴重短缺,最終迫使《世紀帝國》開發商接受微軟收購,並走向解散。

針對部分玩家「先試玩、好玩再買」的說法,彼得森予以嚴厲駁斥,稱其為「徹頭徹尾的藉口」。他強調,無論是《毀滅戰士》提供的整整9關免費體驗,還是《世紀帝國》放出的完整戰役試玩版,開發團隊當年已盡最大努力為玩家提供充足的試玩內容,玩家沒有任何理由通過非法渠道獲取完整遊戲。他還指出,多家遊戲公司的衰退和解散,盜版都負有不可推卸的責任。
然而,此番言論在玩家社群中引發激烈爭論,觀點兩極分化。不少玩家認為,許多老牌公司的倒閉更多源於自身決策失誤,而非盜版所致。同時,經濟條件限制也是現實因素——對部分經濟困難或年齡較小的玩家而言,盜版可能是他們接觸遊戲唯一途徑,即便沒有盜版,他們也不會轉化為正版付費用戶。

也有一些坦承使用盜版的玩家提到,除價格因素外,本地化支持同樣關鍵。許多遊戲官方未提供中文等語言版本,而盜版團隊往往能推出高質量的民間翻譯,這使得玩家即便購買了正版,實際遊玩時也常選擇盜版。
